Kelly Slaniger was born on 10 January 1982 to Irish Traveller parents somewhere within Scotland. Unfortunately, tragedy struck almost immediately. There was in a catastrophic accident in the dark of night on a mountainside pass – injuries taking the lives of most of his family immediately. Only his mother survived to save his life – she shielded his small body life by using her own to shield him from the bitter weather as she struggled to save him from the wreck and find safety.
Even still, as a new born there would have been little hope for him to survive. His mother carried him for several miles to a small bed and breakfast, collapsing upon opening the door – severely frostbitten, suffering from hypothermia, and near death.
With no hospital nearby, the owners put the mother and child to rest as best they could. Sadly Kelly’s mother did not survive the night. Resolute to take the child to the hospital the next morning, they were somewhat surprised when the authorities came knocking on their door the next morning – apparently the mother must have managed to make a call to the town 12 miles away, or perhaps someone had noticed the wreck on the side of the road.
Regardless, they were happy and somewhat relieved when the officer assured them that the child would be brought to family and would be well cared for despite his tragic birth.
In truth, the child was taken to the mysterious Scottish House Slànaighear, a cult of Apostles of the Dark One who used their magical powers to strengthen their standing and influence in business and government. The House Leader had divined the birth of the child, and it was an easy matter arranging for his retrieval. They chose an old Irish Gaelic name for him, Ceallach, and began training him to be one of their own.
Although by no means altruistic, the cult had been founded many hundreds of years earlier when the initial members have learned of the coming end times in no more than 50 generations through their communion. As they continued to work to understanding the impending Apocalypse, they also increased their own fortunes to best protect themselves in any event. As such, when it was found the young boy was indeed special, they began to train him to be the best tool possible to help their ends, both with their research and other activities.
As Ceallach passed in to maturity, he learned much many relevant skills to aid the house – how to watch without being seen, how to wield the Keris for ritual and defense, and above all how to use his skills to aid and strengthen House Slànaighear. This is how it was for twenty winters. Caellach learned much in science, academia, and even the occult – but was never permitted to leave the grounds of the main estates save for when supervised during official House business.
In a more recent communion, the current leader had found that the time was near at hand, and imparted to the young man that it was possible the world could yet be saved. He gave up work for material gain, and instead focused on how the end may be prevented. During this time Caellach learned much more of the ancient folklore and occult, as well as the cryptic dire prophecies of what was to come. He also further improved his other, more remarkable talents. Unfortunately, others in the House were worried about perceived eccentricities of the cultist leader in his later life, and most importantly his lack of focus on more pressing, and immediate goals. In secret a decision was made, and many of the other elders organized a change in leadership.
They really did not care what the resulting incident would mean for the young man, but were surprised when they did not find his corpse on their return – indeed, there was no sign of the man at all.
This started a new phase in Caellach’s life. At 23 years of age, he had never been out in the cities or towns of Scotland and England before. Now he found himself en route to America with a new patron, and a new name. Caellach wanted to blend in, and leave his old life behind. As such, he became Kelly – and when his written last name – Slànaighear – was misread by one unfamiliar with scottish Gaelic, his last name became Slaniger.
Since that time he has remained employed in a bar in Chicago, helping with mundane tasks while all the while preparing for what he is sure is to come, and fighting the agents of Darkness that he believes may lead the world to it’s end.
